Tip 1: Write Poorly

Only read what you have written, after you’re finished writing the text. Allow yourself to write horribly. If keep holding yourself back and are correcting yourself all the time, you’re probably also holding back on your most creative ideas.

Tip 2: Listen To Your Mother

Eat a balanced diet with lots of healthy foods, make sure you get enough sleep, and exercise. If you’re in top condition, your brain functions in optimal condition as well, which means that you’re more likely to get brilliant creative ideas.

I recommend getting lots of feedback, because if you don’t, you probably don’t have a single clue how you’re doing. In my personal experience, getting feedback often leads me to great new ideas.

Yes, just forget about the laws. Be free. Don’t try to be seen as politically correct. Go against the opinions of the masses on purpose. For example, if you write about a con artist, avoid the cliché and portray him as the good guy, as a hero.

While employers aren’t beating down doors looking for creative writers, there are creative writing jobs that can pay the bills while fulfilling your dreams of being a paid writer. The goal of many aspiring authors is to write a bestseller. Even if you can’t do that, you could write enough fiction or nonfiction throughout the year to make a decent living. However, getting your foot in the door with the right literary agent and/or publisher can take awhile. There are jobs that are more short-term in nature, or that you can do while you are pursuing fame as a book author.

Copywriting is one such career. Copywriters create sales letters, print ad copy, radio and TV commercial scripts, mail order ads and much more. In addition to taking writing in college, you should also take some kind of advertising or marketing course. It is not mandatory to have a college degree to work as a copywriter, but most traditional agencies require this. There are some freelance copywriters who have managed to teach themselves the ropes and work their way into lucrative assignments. Many companies are going the route of freelancers and telecommuters because there are no benefits to pay and no office space being taken up. Therefore, it is cheaper for the employer.

You could teach creative writing at your local community college. If you can put together a syllabus and present your teachings in an effective manner you might get a gig doing this. Or, you could offer online courses in your area of expertise. Without a college degree such as a Master of Fine Arts, you’re not going to be a professor but you can make money teaching others to tap into their creative sides and how to put together a piece of creative work for presentation. There are so many genres in creative writing, you can be as broad or specific as you want.

There are other creative writing jobs available as well. The Internet is a great place to look for them. Some of the sites like About and Suite101 use freelance writers to create their site content, and the writers get a portion of the profits the site makes through advertising revenue. You may also want to look into writing articles for ezines and even print magazines. It can take awhile to find the perfect job for you, however there are money making opportunities for determined creative writers.

How often have you had the thought: "I know so much about this topic, I could write a book about it!" But you’ve never written that book, have you? Too often we find ourselves not acting on the great ideas we have, and when it comes to writing a book, more often than not we don’t get past that initial great idea stage. But the truth is that it’s not that hard to write a book! If you think you could or should write a book, then maybe instead of musing about how fascinating your book could be, you should get down to it and start writing.

How you start will depend on what sort of book you want to write. What will your book be about? Selecting a topic is a necessary first step. Then, decide what the purpose of your book will be. You can write a book for about as many different purposes as there are books in the world… but generally an author writes a book for one of a few usually purposes. Your goal may be to entertain, to inform, to convince, to instruct or to provoke an emotional response (shock, or sorrow, for example). But you should not even try to write a book until you know for certain what you are trying to accomplish.

Once you have your topic and your purpose, the planning stage begins. Writing a book requires a tremendous amount of planning, but it will be well worthwhile in the long term. It will result in a better-written book, and the part where you actually write the book will be that much easier, because the challenging legwork will be done. When you write a book, your pre-planning serves as a roadmap. Not having a plan is like driving in complete darkness. You just won’t know where you’re going!

To plan the book you’re going to write, you must consider your purpose. What will be the best way to accomplish that purpose? You may need to do some serious research before you write a book. Research may include reading other published books, searching through magazine and newspaper archives, studying primary sources, and possibly contacting and interviewing experts. If your book is a personal memoir or work of fiction, you can write the book without too much research. But you must still consider how you can write a book which best communicates the ideas and has the effects you’re hoping to have. A funny memoir should highlight the humor in your experiences; a tragic personal narrative should linger more on the difficult and trying times you’ve been through.

Once you’ve created an outline, go ahead and start writing. You’ll find that if you just get started, you can write a book quickly and let the ideas flow. Before you know it you’ll have a first draft of a manuscript. It’s really not that hard to write a book. The trick, really, is to get started!

For example, a scene you have chosen is an average looking guy briskly walking down the street and suspiciously scanning the area around him. You then explain why this certain person was walking this way. It is possible that this person was part of a gang who just robbed a store and was acting as a decoy for the police to follow. Then you just explain further and add random scenes as you continue the story.

From the scenes you have created, you can then build a creative story from it.

A Combination Of Different Stories

Another effective way of coming up with creative writing ideas is through a combination of different stories – the more absurd the combination, the better.

A good example would be combining the story of Noah and the Arc and the story of Star Trek. You can come up with a story featuring one whole family who survived the demise of their planet by escaping through the spaceship that they built. When will they be able to go back to their home planet?

Another good example would be combining the story of Romeo and Juliet and the story of King Kong. A human has fallen in love with an ape who has the ability to speak. Unfortunately, the norms of society wouldn’t allow their love to flourish.

There are a lot of innovative writing ideas you can come up with by combining different stories.

It’s All About You

You can use yourself as the source of creative writing ideas. Be aware of your interests and preferences. Get to know yourself better and know what truly are your opinions about different subjects and topics. You can use your emotions to stir up your writing juices.

Whatever you can think of, write about it. Pick a topic say, politics. Write what your opinions are and the emotions about the current issues in politics. List everything you can think about it and make a list. You can then pick a topic from this list to come up with your creative writing ideas.

i know it will be far from easy to find a well paying job, but what are my options with a creative writing degree? anybody have any info or insight?

These days, it doesn’t really matter what your degree is in (unless you want to be a doctor or lawyer), but that you have one. If you don’t know what you want to do for a career yet, study what you love, and you’ll find a job later.

I have to teach my class for about 45 minutes with a partner. We have to come up with a creative lesson and have the class write about something at home. Nothing boring, something hands-on and creative. Thanks so much!

One example my teacher gave us was one year 2 students put a giant piece of paper in the middle of the classroom and had the class fingerpaint ranodm things on it. The assigment was to go home and write about what you think this piece of "abstract art" means/symbolizes…

I have a few ideas….I am an arts specialist from NYC and I develop curriculum for schools and museums.

You can pick a famous painting…..Edvard Munch’s "Scream", or Mona Lisa by Leonardo DaVinci, or Vincent VanGogh’s Self-Portrait, Magritte’s work, Picasso’s artwork…weeping woman. Have the student look at the artwork and discuss them. Then create a story about either what happens next in the painting or write a story about Mona Lisa after they posed for the painting. Of course it is your job to give an example and inspire them to create an interesting story…maybe you can work on one with the entire class so they have an example of your expectations. How long you expect it to be? All that fun stuff.

I did another cool writing assignment once where I had the students cut out from a newspaper –20 adjectives, 20 verbs, 10 Nouns. They then had to put the words together somehow in a theme and glue them onto a piece of construction paper. Another good theme is find 20 words that describes themselves, 20 verbs and 10-15 nouns and put them together on a posterboard or construction paper and have them decorate the borders. You can do a sample about you both to show the students.

I will give you 3….for good luck and make them your own. How about having the students rewrite a famous fairy tale with themselves as the star or lead. You can choose 1 famous fairy tale or let them choose their own….I would approve of their story first.
