Creative Writing ? What?S It All About?

We hear and read the term creative writing all the time, but what is it, and what’s all the fuss about? Are these stories about making money from creative writing true, or are they just scams? Can anyone get involved in creative writing, or is it just for budding Shakespeare’s?

All are valid questions, but let’s get one thing straight before we go on: creative writing is an umbrella term that covers many different forms of writing. It is not just the art of writing stories, but that of drafting articles, writing adverts, reviewing products and more – creative writing is just that: being creative with the written word.

All of us will have read many written works during our lifetime: you may read a newspaper, or enjoy books, or you may subscribe to magazines about a sport or hobby that you enjoy or participate in. One thing is for sure – there will be some writers whose work appeals to you more than others.

This is what creative writing is all about: it’s about being you, letting your imagination and style come across in the written piece. While a journalist is limited to writing about the facts, putting the situation across, he or she still has a way with words that is very much their own; while a novelist – of any genre – will write using the same words as any other, it is the way they put the words together, the way they use the sounds and the sentences to draw the picture for you that appeals.

If you want to get into the creative writing lark you need to know where to begin: there are many creative writing clubs across the country – indeed the world – and there is likely to be one local to you. If you are interested then join it; you don’t have to be an expert to begin with, for learning from others is something that is absolutely invaluable.

Furthermore, there are many magazines for writers available, too, and numerous courses on the art of creative writing at colleges – for those of younger and more mature ages, as well. Creative writing is a way of expressing yourself, and the more you indulge, the more you enjoy.

One exercise that is very useful is this: look out of the nearest window to you right now, and write about what you see. You can choose to write in plain language precisely what is there, or you can choose to imagine that there is more than meets the eye. This is creative writing – being able to bring a picture to life in words.

Making money from creative writing is possible – there are many outlets for articles and other forms of writing – but to begin with you have to get involved: join that club, buy that magazine, and enjoy yourself!

Writing Styles Differ, and That’s a Good Thing

300px Post It Writing Styles Differ, and Thats a Good Thing

Image via Wikipedia

One or two years gone, I commenced writing for a local paper group, and started picking up a large amount of stories virtually straight away. I believed initially that my editors were enamored at my writing capability, but what I shortly found out was that they liked to have a spread of writing styles present in their various editions, and I wrote in a unique demeanour. My writing style was always extremely direct when it came to paper writing. I took the proverbial just the facts, ma’am, approach to writing, and it appeared to work out very well for me.

It seemed that while this paper featured a variety of different writing styles, mine wasn’t one of the more unique ones.

There had been one writer who was highly detail-oriented in his stories. He made it a point to try and put readers into whatever eventuality he was writing about, often to the chagrin of our editors who were tight on space or had asked for four hundred words and received 1,200. We had another writer whose style was extremely literary, and her stories frequently read like a classic novel.

She prided herself in taking the additional time to make her story engaging and aesthetically pleasing, and did so terribly efficiently.

Another writer commenced each story she wrote with a story, which worked extremely well to draw readers into the story. With all the different writing styles our paper featured, it gave our group a few unique voices and gave our readers a large amount of variety. I believe the largest mistake that I made as a young writer when I was first starting was thinking that my writing style was inferior to a few of my co-workers because it didn’t feature as much flare as theirs did. Hence , I attempted to spice mine up a bit, and was nearly instantly called down by one of my editors questioning why I had deviated so a long way from the way that I had been writing. I explained to her that of all of the writing styles in the paper, I believed mine was the least engaging, and I wished to flesh my stories out a bit more. She let me know that each one of the writers in the paper felt the same about their style, and that every one of them had attempted to fake the other writers ‘ styles, including mine, at one time. She claimed that she was fond of a selection of writing styles featured in the paper, because varied styles appealed to different people, and some were better fitted to particular sorts of stories than others. That caused me to feel better, though a little embarrassed at the very same time. Writing styles differ, and that is a nice thing. If everyone wrote the same, just as if everyone looked the same or consideration the same way, the world would be an especially dull place.

As a student of creative writing, you will learn a lot about the craft. The average creative writing lesson is anything but average. There are so many different things to learn when in a class of this type. A good writer must have a firm grasp on technical aspects of writing such as spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, pacing and dialogue. From these guidelines can spring forth creativity and imagination. Think of the technical aspects as the foundation of a house, and the story as the exterior, both are necessary for a proper house. You cannot live in a house with no foundation, nor one that is a foundation only.

Creative writing teaching is a creative pursuit in and of itself. Teachers must come up with creative writing lesson plans that teach what needs to be taught while stimulating the creativity of the students. There are so many different kinds of exercises, which teach so many different things. For example one exercise may teach you to write compelling dialogue while another may teach you to avoid passive voice when writing fiction. Some may ask you to write a short autobiography, or describe an object to the best of your ability.

Other creative writing lessons may focus on building believable characters. Some may go into specific genres of literature. Even nonfiction material can classify as creative writing as an article or book on a particular subject because there are so many slants a writer can take and so many ways to present the material. So some exercises may teach you how to put together a winning article for a magazine, ezine or newspaper. The only writing that is not necessarily creative are academic journals, textbooks and technical writing, such as product instructional manuals.

If you want to start learning creative writing on your own, pick up a creative writing guide. These can be found in libraries and bookstores in abundance. Even if you are a student under the tutelage of an instructor taking on some independent creative writing assignments can’t hurt. The more you practice, the better you will become. Practice helps a writer find their unique voice as well as drives home the practical aspects of putting together a creative piece of writing. Every creative writing lesson you learn is another victory because you become a more confident writer who is learning valuable information about their chosen craft.
