I’m considering Columbia College for an undergraduate school, and major in creative writing, and then go on to Columbia University’s journalism school, and study for a Masters in magazine journalism.

Is that possible ?

VERY possible, its practically a straight line, but make sure that whatever school you go to that its one that has a great diversity of programs so that just in case you change your mind, you can study something else that has just as much prestige..and just because its Columbia doesn’t mean that all of its programs are the best!

This is for my dearly defarted beautiful sister who would laugh and punch me. I would punch her back. Nothing to do with sex intended.

ANXIETY TEST: (a NURSING instructor made a statement that anxiety was soooooooo contagious.
After much thought this is what I would say. (So is the flu. Prove from whom they caught it. Panic is contagious, as in someone yelling "fire") I have a lactose intolerance:
Good grief. What do you want from us.
TEST
"It has come to my attention that certain individuals may pass flatus when they are nervous. This may, or may not be, a very reliable diagnostic tool. Certain criteria must be met b4 this can be considered a reliable diagnostic tool. In the event the criteria is met, the flatus is no longer to be called a fart, but a PHART..
This will distinguish one from the other.

To date, no specific criteria have been established. When enough objective data have been collected, specific measurements will be established using data from the test population.

Criteria to be considered are as follows:
Color, frequency, intensity, duration. Velocity, windspeed, wind chill. barometric pressure, volume, pitch, tempo, cadence, half life, productivity, residue, scent, area covered, relieving factors. Contributing factors.affect, effect. Last BM. Diet. Food intolerances.
Relieving factors. Comfort level.

If it is simply a matter of needeng to use the bathroom, they become little Schitts, or big Schitts, as the case may be, for wasting your time. If it is a young person they are simply pharts, if they are older they are old pharts. .

Methods of studying this phenomena have not been
established; however, it is strongly suggested you recruit from volunteers only, or you might stir up a really big stink.

Be sure to take a brown bag for lunch. You might
want to go to "Farters Anonymous" for support. to
be around sympathetic people. They have a lot of
UFO’s . (Unidentified Farting Ones)

Confidentiality and discretion is of the utmost importance. You must take precautions because of allegations that nervous pharts are contagious, but only the nervous ones. Be sure to distinguish; that is the objective of this study.

If you are suggestible, you might consider not working on this project or going around any one at all who passes flatus: Another project entirely, to distinguish the suggestible from the creative original
ones. One is so much more valuable than the other.

Anxious passer people must be placed in separate
hospitals, housing only "The Anxious" and cared for only by "The Anxious" to avoid spread of this
terrible condition. They must live in gated (or gaited, as the case may be) communities covered with a dome to avoid the "brown house" affect.

The End.

Was this idea of of contagiousness the theory of
an anally fixated psychiatrist , assfixiated, nicknamed
"the elusive dreamer." Or, was it the pusscologist?
O,r was it a gaited nursing instructor? .

I guess this means I cannot go to church for a longer period of time.
Defarted as in departed. Macabre I know. Only way we could survive.
she would not hit me, not the one I knew, not for that. She is gone from the same thing that is going to kill me.

It’s creative but I’m not sure how a teacher would grade it.

You and your sister will have a good laugh – if she doesn’t punch you out first.

DeeJay.

Additional info. Not being mean – sorry for not understanding.

erm, i did good at writing me happy i did good.

Is it possible for me to get into Princeton?

I know the statistics, but I was wondering if someone could tell me where I stand. It should be noted that I want to major in English Lit and Creative Writing.

- I’ve just finished my sophomore year. I got a 29 on the PLAN with perfect scores in reading and english. However, I only got a 181 on the PSAT.
- I’m in gifted english classes and will take AP english lit as a junior.
- I spent this past semester in England taking their junior year courses. This includes english lit.
- I’m involved in extra-curricular activites. This includes quiz bowl, voice lessons, musicals, church activities, community service, and mission trips.
- I’m in the top 10% of my class.
- I recently did very well at a writing competition with some poetry of mine.
- Last summer I had a job as an english/writing tutor.
- I’m always reading.

When I list everything like this, it makes me think I could get in. But my friends are always calling me stupid…
So what do you lot think?

Well first of all, it sounds like you need to get better friends. If it’s something you want they should encourage you.
As far as getting in, you sound like you could have a good shot. You have to remember, though, that you are competing against each year’s applicant pool and it is different from year to year. The best thing for you to do is to apply no matter what. Even if people tell you that you shouldn’t, you have nothing to lose by applying, and everything to gain. Right now, as you start your junior year, just do everything you can to optimize your chances. Stay on top of your classes (but don’t stress out, it’ll just be harder that way!) and study for the SATs as best you can. Then, when it comes time to apply, just apply and leave it to faith, knowing you did everything you can. Best of luck to you!

Creative Writing – You Can Do It!

Article by Ron King

The smallest thing can spark an idea for a story. A creative writing prompt can really be anything; it can be something as small as a picture or a single word. Some people gather their ideas from dreams or other sources or art. Anything that gives you the feeling that a great story could evolve can be used as a prompt. A prompt is almost like a preview for a movie: it gives you an idea of what is to come and makes you want to watch the movie. A creative prompt can be anything that makes you want to sit down and write.

The need for finding aids to creative writing often springs from having writers block. If coming up with your own prompts has become hard, don’t worry. There are literally heaps of prompts out there. You just need to find the best ones for you. Take the Internet, for starters. Do a search for creative writing prompts. You will find pages and pages of story starters right at your disposal.

You have many alternatives available while searching for prompts. From starters of one or two words to a brief synopsis of an idea, they are available to you. Some sites offer routine prompts. They will even email them to you. There are many books available with nothing but lists of prompts just waiting to be turned into fascinating stories from your mind.

There are a lot of writers who feel that using lists of prewritten prompts by someone else is cheating. They feel that all prompts used must be their own. But truth be told, there is not a creative writing prompt that has not been written about. It is the creation that comes after the prompt that makes the writing your own. The prompt is not what your creative writing is all about, but a starting line for your imagination. It is merely what opens the door to your imagination, to your passion, and to your thoughts.

Gazing at a blank page is unlikely to produce any inspiration. In fact, it will frustrate you much faster. There is so much beauty in the mundane details of life that you will probably have better luck taking a short walk outside. Observe your surroundings: take in the sights, sounds, and smells. If a detail sticks out to you, try to imagine the story behind it. A smell or sound might trigger a memory or a character that has been hiding in your mind. Memories can be great prompts. Try to think through some simple memories, a chaotic trip to the grocery store, the first time you rode a bike. There could be a story within them. Make sure you have a notebook with you! These inspirations can leave you as quickly as they show up. It’s important to write them down before they’re gone forever. Many writers only use creative aids for writing from outward sources. They are given to them by editors and publishers telling the writer what they want them to write about. Some writers work better this way, being given the idea and running with it. Others prefer using their own. Creative writing prompts not only help spark ideas, they also help spark your memory for you to write about your own past experiences and adventures. You can use them for writings on your website or blog.

A story can evolve from a word that came to you suddenly or from a painting you saw in a gallery. Whether the prompt came from your own mind or an outside source, it doesn’t affect the integrity of the story itself. Either way, you are the one who dreamt up the details of the story, the prompt is nothing more than a jumping off point.

I’m going to address something that may rub some people up the wrong way.

You see, I more than occasionally get a number of people asking me whether they should spend a pile of money to get ‘good at writing’.

And, the place where they’re thinking about parking their cash is with a college, institution or place where they teach ‘creative writing’ or however you want to describe it.

I do a little deep breathing, and then I tell them something similar to the following.

“I personally have never taken a course in creative writing, or know of anyone who has done so either. And, I’m talking about those people, friends and colleagues who want to write their own sales messages that sell products and services.”

Of course, that’s just a handful of people whom I know and hang out with. And let me quickly say that I know people who routine sell tens of thousands of pounds, some hundreds of thousands of pounds, PER MONTH, all from conveying their sales messages in ‘non creative writing’ methods.

Now, I do know people who have taken these kinds of creative courses who then want to write heart affecting poetry, or, have this notion of being a famous fiction author, or anything other than using it to write messages that sell.

Let me speedily say that a lot of people get hung up about the application of the word ‘creative’.

I’m all for applying creative marketing to a product or service, but then grounding it in basic, solid, direct response copywriting techniques and strategies.

I’m against using flowery, meaningless, airy fairy language to convey a message. I’m against using silly riddles, rhymes and annoying clownishness to get across a concept, idea or thought.

If you want to know a simple truth and, what is really a powerful secret, because many just don’t GET it, is that when you can ‘write like you talk’, you’ll be way ahead of those who call themselves COPYWRITERS.

You’ll know more than what’s in any course; be it copywriting, creative writing, journalism, or any other.

But, there’s a little disclaimer to this: If your talk, your normal conversation, is lacklustre, minimal and simply dull, then, writing like you talk won’t help you. Unless…

… Unless… you tune in to how everyday people are actually talking. To how your customers are talking. And then, capture that use of language and then weave it in your communications.

Let me tell you that there’s no easier, quicker or cheaper way to help you on your way to becoming a more proficient and effective ad, website, email or sales letter writer, than most of the PROFESSIONALS out there.

But… if you’re hell bent on putting your money into a creative writing course in order to help you better your sales messages, if I were given the choice, I’d choose a scriptwriting or screenwriting course.

And there’s a very good reason for choosing those.

You see, a really good sales message, is essentially, a story. Good copywriting is closer to the great fiction novels than you’d believe.

Not only will you learn effective ways of creating an ‘opening’ for a sales message, you’ll learn about plots, characters, curiosity, suspense, drama…

… all essential ingredients for a compelling sales message.

I hope I haven’t put too many noses out of joint in this article and sincerely wish your money is wisely invested.

The therapeutic benefits of creative writing have long been recognised; indeed, writing therapy which uses the act of writing and processing the written word to ease pain and strengthen the immune system, has existed since the 1930s. The East Midlands novelist and poet D H Lawrence believed that one could get rid of one’s maladies and master one’s emotions through the medium of writing. The need to examine a feeling or thought and make sense of a situation is what drives many writers to tell a story. This can be presented as fiction or non-fiction, and the huge growth in publishing of autobiographies and ‘misery memoirs’ would suggest that many are taking up this option of therapy either independently or through writing courses. That so many copies of such works are purchased, suggests that the benefits are reciprocal; the reader feels the connection to the writer and both have benefited.

The use of creative writing as a therapy presents the writer with a mechanism of coping with their stress. It helps them to uncover and ultimately manage repressed feelings and to develop a better understanding of their worries and their state of mind. The therapeutic benefits can be applied to many different cases – someone who is feeling a little ‘down’ can gain as much benefit as a depressive. Each case needs to be looked at individually and the methods and intended results carefully planned. For example, many people find that the act of creative writing, maybe producing a poem or short story, makes them feel better. On the other hand, someone who is battling to find themselves would need the direction of an expert in the field.

But this type of therapy is not just limited to the unhappy or sad… under the right creative writing tutelage, writers who are worried about writing about sex or violence can confront and overcome their repressions; in the safe environment of a course, writers will feel free to use linguistic techniques that they would never have used before thus becoming more accomplished writers.

Nowadays, creative writing need not be constrained by the availability of publishing or fitting a format. The ‘world wide web’ provides the perfect medium for sharing any experience in pictures or in words. The need to do so felt by so many has led to the growth of blogs and social networking websites.

When E.M. Forster urged us to ‘only connect’, he could have had no idea how comprehensively we would embrace his entreaty. We now have the capability to enjoy the therapy of creative writing in doses of various sizes from tweets to literary tomes. The facility to share experiences with peers and strangers alike has reawakened the creative writer in so many of us; we may not have the ability or the wish to write that book but we are able to elevate the art of creative writing from the enforced labours of the classroom to its rightful place as something we do for pleasure.
