Creative writing is a way to get your students interested in the writing process and more excited about literature and different forms of expression. A creative writing lesson could cover poetry writing, short stories, creative non-fiction and satire. Decide what you will be focusing on when teaching creative writing. Your goal should then be to develop your students’ interests and to make the writing assignment relevant to your students’ lives.
Instructions
I’ve been writing most of my life, ever since the yearning to become a writer crept into my consciousness when I was about ten years old. I won’t claim to be a great writer, yet I know without doubt, my writing has steadily improved over the years. And, so can yours. If you too have a desire to become a better writer, continue reading.
1
Make a lesson plan. The lesson plan should be detailed and make full use of a student’s available time. Any copies or samples you need should be gathered and ready before class.
2
Bring in and discuss examples of different creative writing forms for the students to see. Students will get a better idea of what is expected of them with samples to use as a guide.

3
Cover different literary elements and give a compiled list to your students. Stress how each functions in a piece and how it helps add either humor, drama, irony or to the overall mood of the piece.
4
Give several writing options and topics or choose a class theme for students to write about. Limit the options and topics, not the creativity. This will make assessment manageable.
5
Give the students an option to work in groups or individually. If students work in a group, each group member should contribute something unique to the overall production of the piece.
* 6
Have students present. By having oral presentations, students get a chance to see what others created. This further stimulates your students’ imaginations by giving them new ideas.
Tips & Warnings
*
Keep the lesson student centered and allow students to write about something that interests them. Stay away from cliched topics and ensure students have enough time to complete the assignment.
