A Look at Online Masters Degree Programs

image thumb A Look at Online Masters Degree ProgramsIf you have already obtained your associates and bachelor’s degrees, the next step is a masters degree. This kind of degree can take anywhere from 1 to 3 years to obtain depending on the field of study and the educational program attended. There are online masters degree programs offered these days that make it easier than ever for working adults to continue their education. In many fields, such as business, medicine and education, a masters degree often equals higher pay and more opportunity for advancement.

Getting your online master degree involves attending virtual classes, completing coursework and taking tests. Sometimes you may need to attend classes or take tests in person depending on the program in which you are enrolled. The first step before you can do any of this is to apply and get approved for the program. Step one is to review the requirements set forth by the educational institution you wish to attend. You will need to submit transcripts, and may need to take a placement exam and/or provide letters of reference.

A masters degree is often dependent on a number of factors, including GPA, field work, and exam scores. A thesis, which is a comprehensive written project based on research, is also usually required to obtain this degree. It all depends on the type of masters degree you are pursuing. For example, a masters in education will have different requirements than a masters in nursing. The good news is that it is entirely possible for you to continue working at your current job while pursuing your degree. Some employers may even offer tuition reimbursement for employees who are seeking to further their education in the field in which they are currently working.

If you have already obtained your bachelors degree you are ready to search for online masters degree programs. The university from which you got your bachelors may offer distance learning programs, if not, you will need to find an accredited university that does. There are many masters degree programs that can be completed online, either partially or fully. Financial aid is often available as well in the form of student loans, grants and scholarships. Upon successful completion of a masters degree program if you wish to further your education the next step is obtaining a doctorate. This is a degree you may also be able to obtain through an online program.

Take an Online Learning College Class

When you think about it, it makes a lot of sense to take an online learning college class. First of all, it is very convenient. If you had a late night partying with your friends, you will not have to get up early for class. You can take when you are rested and ready to learn. You can read and reread material and not be rushed so you can absorb the material thoroughly and not be limited by the time allotted for a regular class. My husband does all of his continuing education online. He has to have twenty hours each year to keep up to date on tax law changes and finds it much less stressful to do it at home. He can concentrate more on areas in which he needs extra time to study.

These days many students are working full time jobs in addition to getting their degree. Since you are in a virtual classroom, there is no worry that the class will fill before you can register. If you have to work late, you won’t have to worry about missing your class; you can just do it when you have the time. In addition, the work you do while getting your degree is almost as important as the degree. Employers look favorably on employees who are trying to improve their education and do a better job. Some even offer educational compensation to help defray the costs of college. There are tax benefits as well.

Another reason to consider online classes is money. Not everyone can afford to go to school full time. It is certainly easier to work around an online schedule than a set college schedule. When I was managing a veterinary hospital, we employed a number of students and as the person who made out the monthly schedule; I found that juggling every employee’s school schedule was a nightmare. Someone always had to leave early to take an exam or could not work because of a class commitment.

Because of the commitment and self discipline it requires getting a degree online; many studies have shown these students to be more successful. Whether you are a new graduate or a worker who wants to get ahead; consider an online learning college program. There are many courses to choose from and you will have an opportunity to advance your existing career or start an entirely new one.

I’m considering Columbia College for an undergraduate school, and major in creative writing, and then go on to Columbia University’s journalism school, and study for a Masters in magazine journalism.

Is that possible ?

VERY possible, its practically a straight line, but make sure that whatever school you go to that its one that has a great diversity of programs so that just in case you change your mind, you can study something else that has just as much prestige..and just because its Columbia doesn’t mean that all of its programs are the best!

I’m talking about a bachelor’s degree. I’m not concerned about graduate studies, only undergraduate. I also want to exclude minors and "certificate" programs. Full fledged bachelors degrees in creative writing. Thanks
Please include your source if possible.

Most colleges offer this type of undergraduate program while some may offer it as an emphasis. You can check out what colleges offer this type of program below:

undegraduate creative writing degree?

does anyone know of a school that offers an undergraduate degree in creative writing ONLINE? i’ve been looking and have been unable to find one.

Saint Mary of the Woods College in Indiana has an undergraduate major and minor in creative writing by distance learning model.

They require visits to the campus each semester as I understand their program but the classes are then completed by distance.

I feel uncapable of writing a fiction book.

At present, I am writing a non-fiction, and while I’m close to finishing it, I’m not sure if some parts are good. I also don’t have any ideas of how to improve them.

Baes on this, do you think I could become or a writer, or an ocasional writer, after attending a Master’s degree in Creative Writing?

I have an MFA in Creative Writing, and, in my opinion, the answer is "No." If you are already writing fiction, the Master’s program can help you refine your work and make professional contacts. But it won’t teach you how to write or get you started.

There’s a free online course for beginning fiction writers that you could check out at http://www.creative-writing-now.com/free-online-writing-courses.html

An actual "creative writing degree" does not exist for undergrads. Instead, you can get a degree in English with a minor or concentration in creative writing/writing. Most who have a creative writing concentration then pursues becoming an author. However, you don’t need any degree to become an author or a writer. With an English degree, you can then pursue corporate jobs or other nondescript jobs requiring English majors. There aren’t many specific creative writing jobs. Again, you will have a English degree so your options are expanded there. However, finding a creative writing job is limited. You can become an author if a publishing company is impressed with your work. You can also work for a publishing company to read manuscripts. You can also go on to pursue a MFA (masters in fine arts…ie a final degree for creative writers. A Ph.D is not offered for creative writing). In an MFA program, you will work intensely to sharpen your craft for writing. An MFA takes around 5 years. Most MFA writers become good enough to become published.
