Creative writing competitions can serve several purposes. One of them is to get you writing. If you have a maximum word count and a deadline it concentrates the mind and can result in work that otherwise would never have been written.. If you are given a subject to write about it is even better.

Another consideration is fame and fortune. Not a bad incentive, but here we must be realistic. Competitions are usually for short stories and are held by magazines or publishers. The competitions can vary from very small to very big. A few are free but most have entry fees. This is quite acceptable, as prize money must come from somewhere. However entry fees can be quite high and if you enter a lot of competitions the cost of fees adds up alarmingly.

The small creative writing competitions have a few hundred entries and give you a definite chance of winning. After all some of the entries will be very bad, some will be excluded, as the authors have not read the submission guidelines properly, and a few will miss the deadline completely. This reduces the opposition to something manageable. If you are a competent writer you have a chance of being in the top two or three. But what do you get for your trouble? The prize money will probably cover your entry fee and the price of a coffee at Starbucks. You might only get a free copy of the magazine sponsoring the competition. That is about it. Your name will appear on the list of winners, but few people will read the list. So entering a small competition is little more than writing practice, whatever the outcome. But writers have to start somewhere and a win or a shortlist can cheer you up a lot and inspire you to greater things.

Big creative writing competitions are different. They attract an international entry of thousands. The winner gets an impressive prize and lots of publicity. Not free publicity, do not forget the entry fee, but valuable publicity which can push a career forward. The standard of winners will be very high. They may be competition specialists who are not only excellent writers but know exactly what the judges are looking for. Perhaps they are published authors who, by definition, are very experienced at what they do.You should never think you are not good enough to enter any competition, but a reality check is needed here. Just to be on the shortlist of maybe 100 writers is to have performed well. If you win you will have earned your fame and fortune.

Of course one sure way to avoid winning a competition is not to have entered in the first place. Have a go, you may not win – not at first anyway – but you will have written your entry. If you do not achieve the success you hoped for in the competition send your story to suitable magazines or publishers. Someone will give it a home. Then move on to your next competition.

For all those of you who think that writing is not your cup of tea, here’s an opportunity for you to question that statement. Creative writing is not just about the mind, it is something that comes from the heart as well. When you narrate stories that get people’s ears glued to them, these are the stories you have actually experienced, lived and felt. Similarly, writing about something you have experienced is way easier to portray rather than writing something you are totally new to.

Calling oneself an excellent writer wouldn’t be right as that would leave no space for ones improvement. What would surprise you would be the hundreds and thousands of situations you put yourself through everyday have several stories that are worth penning down.

When things are different, that is when they click. For instance, you would definitely not find anything amusing about a housewife getting her kids ready for school while her husband is off to work but the same story would get so amusing if the husband got the kids ready at home while the wife is off to work.

Try writing a diary and you will know there’s so much to write in a day. Out of all the things you write, you would find so many incidents worth communicating. Bringing creativity to your words is definitely not a cake walk but bringing in experience to your words is definitely not that difficult. Sometimes it really works to pave the path to creativity.

You should never confine your thoughts to any boundaries, for instance, if there’s something embarrassing you went through, try sharing it, you may just end up adding humor to your content. Similarly, never shy away from being bold. If your copy requires sex appeal, you must use it.

Sometimes you could learn environmental description when you expose yourself to various forms of nature. Traveling could always take you places. See new places, learn new things, study different people, interact with them and this would definitely bring about a change in you. This change would very well be reflected in your words. The key is the more you know, the more is there to share.

Sometimes when you experience things you had always had biased opinions about may bring about positive change in your opinions and thereby can help in breaking a stereotype. For instance, when everyone says the darkroom always has ghosts, you would be the different one saying, the darkroom has so many corners unexplored worth visiting. This would make you stand out.

So, expose yourself, try out new things and add on to your uniqueness!

I really want to apply for a course titled “English and Creative Writing” or possibly another English Course. If a University says that the requirements are “English Literature or English Language” will they accept you if you have English Language/Literature combined?

It can be very stressful talking to your professor about your work, particularly if he or she clearly didn’t understand what you were writing about. This brief movie should provide a few helpful start-up tips.

Question by Ellie: Writing a creative honors science paper about the water cycle (PLEASE HELP!)?
It has to be like a 3 paged, double spaced times new roman font paper. It was assigned monday and is due friday. It has to be “creative writing” like a children’s story. And it has to have all elements to any short story like “rising action” and “climax” and whatnot. I already had the idea of naming the characters after the parts of the water cycle: “Evaporation” , “Condensation” , “Precipitation” , “Runoff” , and “Percolation”
But other than the names I am absolutely clueless of what to do. HELP!

Best answer:

Answer by Christina
It’s just an idea, but make your story an adventure. The main character is your water particle. If you start in evaporation, the story can be about Aqua, a little water particle who wants to find the perfect home. Now, take her on an adventure. She feels light and airy (evaporation) and loves playing in the wind, then she gets cool and heavy (condensation) and thinks the perfect home is in the clouds and continue on.

The rising action and climax part are a bit sketchy for me. The only thing I can come up with is to have her choose the clouds as her perfect home. She could be scared of falling…why is she changing….can’t dance in the breeze anymore because she’s too heavy…etc. The climax could be the falling, and the runoff could be the falling action. Finally she’s back where she started where she realizes the perfect home is anywhere you’re happy (to her ALL the places).

That’s a really rough idea. You’ll have to clean it up. But I think it would be really fun to write, and still explain the cycle.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

About Creative Writing

Creative writing is any form of fiction, non-fiction, or poetry that is not technical in nature. Creative writing is known as free writing, the type where there are no rules or structure to follow. Creative writing can be found in articles, novels, short stories, poetry, and even screenplays fit into this category. Creative writing is a more of a contemporary style of writing than anything else. It represents anything that is an original work of writing. Creative writing is the medium that celebrates self expression. It enables you to express thoughts, opinions and ideas in any medium.

If you’re new to creative writing you might want to start with something small to get a taste of it. By writing a short story you can get an idea of what’s involved in creative writing. If you start with a novella or novel you’ll probably quit before you finish it. Novellas and novels take a lot of passion and discipline to finish. In fact quite a lot of writers have trouble finishing long works of creative writing so many just stick to writing short stories or poetry. Novel writing can be very challenging and sometimes takes years to finish. Of coures not everyone is able to write creatively. Some people don’t do well with the freedom and lack of structure. Coming up with creative outlines, characters and plots that are interesting to your potential reader, is not an easy task. But once you do finish a novel or short story, and it’s complete, the feeling you get is amazing.

Grade school teaches you the basics of creative writing. But if you’re really looking into the subject colleges and universities are where the knowledge is at. They offer courses in different areas and give you the special one-on-one attention you may need. They also show you different genres of writing and you learn what types you enjoy to write about.

Using story starters or writing prompts is another way to get ideas for stories that will take you places you’ve never expected.

Trying to get published in the creative writing industry is very competitive. Unless you have an idea that the publishers are looking for, and it’s the right place at the right time, getting published by a large publishing house is not easy. In fact many writers are published only after many attempts and many rejection letters later. In any case, if creative writing is your passion, practise makes perfect. The more you write and the more you read, will help you improve your writing.
