Studying for an English degree at Goldsmiths is an interdisciplinary and invigorating experience, and we’re one of the top 200 departments worldwide. We are distinctive in the intellectual range of our teaching and research. Our main field of critical inquiry extends from Old English literature to twenty-first century literatures in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. Our earliest focus is on Classical literature and our latest on Creative Writing. In this new writing, our conspicuous strength springs from those staff and students who contribute directly to some of the literatures studied. We read the literatures of yesterday and today, and write literature for tomorrow. www.gold.ac.uk www.gold.ac.uk Video Rating: 5 / 5

I really want to apply for a course titled “English and Creative Writing” or possibly another English Course. If a University says that the requirements are “English Literature or English Language” will they accept you if you have English Language/Literature combined?
Thank-You

Question by celtichistoryfreak: What Can I do with an English Major…?
I’m going to college majoring in English right now. I want to know what I can do with it aside from the normal “Creative Writing” and “Literature” Concentrations. I’ve heard that I could be a Technical Writer but other than that I have no idea what I can do with an English major.

Answer by Betsy You could also become a journalist or a teacher. There are also numerous jobs available that require a college degree but no particular major. They are available in businesses, in government, and in nonprofit organizations.
Question by Lucy: HELP. “creative writing” english essay. What Can I write about?
I need to write my english “creative writing” essay as part of my coursework but have know idea what to write it about. I want it to mean something to have some sort of impact. Like I was thinking of this quote i heard in this great tv series medium.. it said something like “Most people who jump of buildings to commit suicide realise 1/3 of the way down that they have something to live for”. And i thought that would be a good start to a story.. but i cant remember the quote exactly so i dont think it will work. Anyone got an idea? Something Intreaging? Or at least Slightly interesting? I would be totally grateful for any suggestions as two weeks on i have written nothing. Thankyou. x x

Answer by fez why not just go with the quote as you’ve written it here? You don’t need to actually use the quote. You could write a story that begins with a person 1/3 of the way through a leap from a 20 story building and the person is regretting the jump. It’s a pretty good premise for a story.
Look up John Barth–he wrote a story about the 24 hours preceding the moment at which the main character decides NOT to commit suicide. Okay, I looked it up. It was called “The Floating Opera.”
To celebrate World Book Day, Rebecca Nesvet, senior lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Gloucestershire, has chosen to discuss Tom Stoppard’s 1993 play, Arcadia. “Judged the greatest modern British play by Independent columnist Jonathan Hari, Arcadia follows the adventures of fictional Regency prodigy Lady Thomasina Coverley and her increasingly bewildered private tutor Septimus Hodge through a maze of farce, wordplay, romance and tragedy. In the following century, Thomasina and Septimus are joined by a group of modern scholars of various disciplines in pursuit of the answer to the greatest question: when people are not wholly in charge of their destinies, random events happen, and the world might end in total chaos, why do we bother to learn, love, or live? Stoppards Arcadia is, more than any text I can think of, the universe in paper covers. As such, it inspired my first attempts at playwriting, and continues to challenge me as a writer and as a teacher of playwriting in the Field of Creative Writing at the University of Gloucestershire.”
