If you have a knack for writing and derive pleasure from expressing your own ideas, a likely course in creative writing can harness your skills even further. A lot of people discovered their writing skills by finding enjoyment in describing scenes and characters with the use of words. They find these exercises exhilarating because they realize they also have the ability to create interesting compositions in the same style and manner of professional writers.

A course in creative writing is not really a formal tutelage in the basics of writing. It is more of an aid on how you can further enhance an innate ability to imagine and explore ideas and use the right words that could get your message across to the reader. Previous writing experiences or specific qualifications are not required if you will be interested to enroll in a course in creative writing.

What counts is your determination and willingness to learn. You should eliminate any preconceived notions and maintain openness to criticisms especially about your work. A mentor or critics will base their comments both as expert writers and as readers not with the intention of putting down your capabilities as a creative writer but as a means of improving your craft. The proponents of a course in creative writing maintain that there are no sets of patterns to observe. There are no pressures or time lines to follow since these may affect your ability to come up with worthy ideas.

In an online course in creative writing the procedure will start by asking the enrollee about the topics, themes or subject matter that interests him or her. This will then be the basis by the course provider in choosing the instructor who will personally be in charge of the enrollee’s course development and performance. Submissions and assimilation regarding the enrollee’s written work will be done through emails and will be posted at the website.

Your personal mentor will provide you with basic guides on how your creative writing composition will have that professional look. The course on creative writing will proceed at your own pace. The more creative outputs you will be able to submit for review of your mentor, the more opportunities you will have to explore different aspects of your writing works.

On the other hand, if you are to formally enroll in a university you will have to carefully look over the kind of approach that each university use. Some universities offer the course in creative writing as part of their English curriculum in Arts and Sciences. This will be sub-categorized as “Creative Writing” and “Individual Studies, Creative” both as English subjects.

In other universities, the course in creative writing is offered as workshops and may be categorized as “Creative Writing Poetry” or “Creative Writing Fiction”; still, another institution offer workshops in “Creative Writing: A Multicultural Approach” which deals with both poetry and fiction writing.

Most of these universities will carry out the course in creative writing by conducting lectures, discussions as well as practical exercises as a means of teaching a student to write his literary compositions. Now, if you are interested on how you can make your creative writing skills even better than it already is, enroll in a course in creative writing skills by choosing an online course or enrolling in a formal educational institution.

One of the fun challenges about writing is that there is always room for growth and improvement. It is an on-going process that can benefit from the passage of time and practice. Here are ten tips that might help improve your creative Instructions.

* 1

First, get a partner to work with. Look to your library for help. Sometimes there are writers’ groups that get together and critique each other’s writings. This is the best place to get help initially.

* 2

Second, write every day. Pick up a journal at the dollar store and dedicate time every day to writing for at least 10 minutes.

* 3

Third, read the type of books you want to write. For example, if you are interested in writing nonfiction, then read several nonfiction books by different authors. This will help you to identify the type of writer you want to become.

* 4

Fourth, read books that are opposite of what you want to write. Sometimes if we read books that are not in our usual scope, new ideas emerge. It may give you an idea on how to start your story or how to organize it in a different way

* 5

Fifth, when you sit down to write, don’t be critical of yourself. Tell yourself that you’ll come back and edit later. Let the ideas flow.

* 6

Sixth, when you are done writing, print it out and read it out loud. This doesn’t mean read it in your head. Actually read it out loud to a friend or just to yourself. This will help you to catch many more mistakes.

* 7

Seventh, write the introduction last. After you have written the whole story, go back to the beginning and write an introduction that will capture the audience and get them ready for the story

8

Keep a journal designed for your eyes only. Think of journal writing as a free association exercise, but instead of reveal what’s on your mind to your therapist, you’re doing it with your journal. If you can’t find anything to write about, take your journal to a public place and observe your surroundings. Describe the scene.

9

Give things specific names. A cherry red vintage Mustang is much more descriptive than “car” or even “sports car.” The cherry red vintage Mustang communicates something to the reader about the owner of the car. Make your nouns specific.

10

Show action with strong verbs. Life is not static, and your writing shouldn’t be either. Bypass boring forms of the verb “to be” in favor of more lively action words.

11

Choose modifiers like adjectives and adverbs sparingly. When you use adjectives, opt for one specific adjective over several mediocre ones. When tempted to modify a verb with an adverb, see if you can instead make your verb more specific. “She whispered” is more detailed than “she said softly.”

12

Explore figurative language. Similes and metaphors provide creative ways to describe something or someone. Use personification to describe your rebellious computer. You might exaggerate with a hyperbole by writing that a cat was so ugly it could scare a dog. Beware of clichés, overused figures of speech that don’t contribute anything to your writing.

13

Depict information with all your senses. Much of writing depends on what you visually see and occasionally hear. More powerful creative writing comes from the use of the other senses. The stench of garbage tells a reader more than seeing a room in disarray. The tangy taste of lemonade pursing your lips carries more power than someone taking a drink.

Most people are under the impression that only a select number of people are able to write creatively and confidently. They have a gift or have gone to school to learn the secrets to confidently write creative articles, blogs, and books. But in reality, almost anyone can learn to write confidently.

First of all, you can cultivate your creative thinking by actively participating in a creative activity everyday. It can be any creative activity. It can be drawing, painting, doodling, or even coloring. I like to do rubber stamping and make simple cards for birthdays or special occasions. I also like to plan fun and creative activities, for my son’s class, to do during their class parties. I also like to write down or print out inspirational emails, sayings, or words to songs that I like or that inspire or touch my heart. This is a great place to get ideas, starting points, or topics to write confidently about. It is a great place to find creative material or ideas, that touch your heart or that matter, to write about.

Secondly, is to try something new everyday. It can be as simple as taking a different route home, which also helps to sharpen your memory. It can be to try a new type of food or just picking something that you have not tried on a menu. It can be to try out a new recipe or exercise routine. One of my favorite things that I used to do, is to take a weekly swing and salsa class. I would get my exercise in while learning new steps to dances. These new adventures or activities will help to inspire you with new ideas of things to write about and also help your confidence and creatively.

Thirdly, is to day dream. Just taking time to let your mind wander and daydream about your plans for your life, your aspirations, or your goals. I like to day dream or envision my future goals or aspirations being accomplished or met. This also helps to keep me motivated towards working towards my goals. Daydreaming also helps to develope your imagination. Spending time to just daydream and image all sorts of magical or wonderful things helps in the developement of adding more depth and description to writing. It is also fun to just leave the cares of your life behind for a couple of minutes. Then you can come back, refreshed, and ready to write more confidently and creatively.

Fourthly, you can broaden your creative writing by reading everything that you can get your hands on or that interests you. This not only expands your mind but it can also open your mind to new adventures, possibilities, ideas, and interests. That in turn, will make you a more interesting and creative writer. It will also give you more material to talk, think, and write about.

Lastly, have a notebook that you carry around that you can jot ideas or thoughts throughout the day. I also put a notebook beside my bed because right before I fall asleep, I get a lot of great ideas of things to write about. If I don’t write these ideas down before I fall asleep, by the time I am ready to write about them, I usually have forgotten about them. By having a notebook handy to jot down ideas and thoughts, it will give you a head start on finding something creative to write about and increase your confidence in your writing skills.

Remember that unleashing your creative writing skills isn’t something that usually happens magically overnight, but it is something that happens over time. It is like a muscle that you have to exercise. For instance, when you work out the first time, your muscles don’t instantly get stronger and muscular overnight. It takes time. Try the ideas that I have mentioned and you will start coming up with more and more ideas to unleash your creative thinking and writing.

Over the years, writing experts have recognized that English writing skills are one of creative communication’s most essential aspects. Furthermore, today’s modern age of immediate communication has reinforced the requirement to write clearly, fully, and compellingly.

True enough, creative writing is a process that must be given a lot of consideration and effort. First, you would have to identify your writing area. This must be a subject in which you find yourself at your most creative and thus, at your most constructive. This would vary from person to person. Some individuals would prefer to work with some music playing in the background; some prefer background chatter and movement, while some wants total silence when they are writing.

The entire process would also involve finding the inspiration behind the piece, the writing itself, flowing with momentum, and completing. The final step is the editing part. This involves proofreading the text and making the necessary revisions. Revising is not a one-time task. The best writers revise their work several times, until they are completely satisfied with the final result. However, if you are not someone who has exceptional understanding of the grammar rules, the editing and revising part will pose much difficulty for you. You could employ the help of an expert, but this could be time-consuming. Your best option is to make use of creative writing software.

Creative writing software greatly helps by organizing your thoughts. It also offers inspiration and advice. It also suggests writing prompts that would get your mind whirring. Another benefit of this software is that it provides help in formatting screenplays, novels, and other creative writing forms. Some offer functionalities for text enrichment.

With the grammatical aspect, you would be provided assistance in checking the spelling, punctuation usage, and grammatical compositions. The sentences you have created will be checked and revised accordingly so that they will become fluent, clean, and accurate. Confusing sentences and redundant paragraphs will be dealt with accordingly. This software makes use of a mechanism that attempt to simulate the human mind by reading the written text carefully, analyzing it, and then “fixing” it in accordance with an advanced self-learning algorithm. Some programs work by suggesting corrections as you type the text. They offer better modes of paragraph development, suggest better sentence structures, point out redundant ideas, and observe proper rhetoric. Therefore, our text becomes easier to read and understand. Not only will your writing become more comprehendible, but you will also improve you English writing and speaking knowledge and skills by being exposed repeatedly to your common lapses. Thus, it also assists greatly in character development because you would become more confident with your writing. Moreover, free trials are often offered, so you can get to familiarize yourself first with how the mechanism works before you actually purchase the software.

By having something that will automatically identify and correct common errors in writing, you get to upgrade your skills. Without a doubt, creative writing software will provide all the help you need if you want all your writings to be professional, clear, understandable and error-free.
